5 Tips to Improve Your Vehicle’s Fuel Economy

Multiple fuel options at a gas station fuel pump.

How much you spend on fuel is something that most vehicle owners consider quite frequently. While certain vehicles do have better fuel efficiency than others, there are also ways you can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy to lengthen the amount of time you spend between fuel-ups. Read on as our team at Calgary Hyundai dives right into five ways to improve your vehicle’s fuel economy, including keeping your speed, if your tires are properly inflated, and how your vehicle is maintained, as well as coasting to a stop and using your A/C instead of rolling down the windows.

4 Signs Your Hyundai Needs a Wheel Alignment

1. Keep Your Speed Nice and Steady

Accelerating and decelerating while you drive uses more fuel, so driving in a way that keeps your speed steady, such as using cruise control, especially in areas where you’re going 75 km/hr and over.

2. Coast to a Stop Instead of Slamming on the Brakes

A quick stop increases fuel usage, so instead of stopping quickly at lights or stop signs, take the time to coast to a stop. Simply remove your foot from the gas a little distance away from where you ultimately want to stop, and then slowly press on it once you get closer. Keep an eye on traffic in front of you, as then it’s easier to judge just how much you can coast in order to save yourself some fuel.

3. Keep Your Tires Inflated Properly

The more your tires interact with the road you’re driving on, the more fuel your vehicle needs to expend to keep it moving. As such, keep your tires inflated the proper amount (located in your owners manual) so that you keep your tires in peak performance while also lessening fuel consumption.

4. Use Your A/C Instead of Your Windows

While it can be fun to drive with the windows open in nicer weather, when you drive at speeds over 75 km/h with the windows down you create more air resistance, which makes your engine have to use more fuel than it normally would. As such, use the A/C instead when driving at higher speeds to save yourself some fuel.

5. Keep Your Vehicle Maintained

It should go without saying, but keeping your vehicle in peak condition is always the best for all of its components, and that includes your engine. If you want to save on money, it’s best to schedule yourself for regular maintenance with trained technicians, who will keep your vehicle running smoothly, which ultimately keeps more fuel in your tank.
